In India, the Co-operative Movement began with the enactment of the Co-operative Societies Act, 1904, which was subsequently revised and replaced by the Co-operative Societies Act, 1912. These legislative developments provided the foundation for the growth of the co-operative banking system, leading to the establishment of Central Co-operative Banks and, subsequently, District Co-operative Banks in various parts of the country.
On 19 February 1920, the District Co-operative Bank Ltd., Azamgarh was established in Azamgarh District. At the time of its establishment, the Bank's area of operation was limited to Azamgarh.
During its initial years, the Bank faced various financial challenges. However, with the continued support and trust of the local community, the Bank gradually progressed and strengthened its financial position. Like a small seed growing into a strong tree, the Bank expanded steadily through dedication, perseverance, and sound management.
In 1945, the Bank successfully completed its first Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years of its establishment. Subsequently, the Bank came under provincial supervision during 1954–55, which further strengthened its administrative and operational framework. Following the introduction of the new Co-operative Act in 1965, the Bank continued to achieve steady growth and greater stability.
The Bank's remarkable journey from 1920 onwards reflects its strong foundation, prudent management, commitment to the co-operative movement, and the trust of its customers and members. Over the decades, the Bank has progressively expanded its branch network, workforce, capital base, deposits, working capital, and profitability, demonstrating sustained growth and development.
RBI Banking Licence
The Bank's banking operations received regulatory recognition from the Reserve Bank of India. The RBI, Department of Co-operative Bank Supervision, Regional Office, Lucknow, granted the Azamgarh District Co-operative Bank Ltd., Azamgarh, a licence to commence and carry on banking business under Licence No. DCBS.LK.50 (DCCB)/2016, dated 30 September 2016.
The licence document specifies that the Bank's area of operation shall be confined to Azamgarh District of Uttar Pradesh. The licence was issued under the powers conferred upon the Reserve Bank of India by Section 22(1), read with Section 56(o), of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 (AACS).
The Bank has continued to maintain its commitment to the co-operative banking sector and to serving the financial needs of the people of Azamgarh.
The steady progress and development of the Bank have been made possible through the collective efforts of dedicated elected representatives, guidance from departmental and regulatory authorities, and the integrity, commitment, and hard work of the Bank's employees.
As part of its modernization journey, the Bank has progressively adopted modern banking technology. Its branches are operating under the Core Banking Solution (CBS) platform, enabling customers to access efficient and convenient banking services. Facilities such as RTGS and NEFT support electronic fund transfers across the country, while ATM services provide customers with greater convenience and accessibility.
Today, the Bank continues its journey with a commitment to customer service, financial inclusion, technological advancement, and the principles of co-operative banking.
